I got mine on sale for about $150. AMD is like the people's CPU price wise for performance.

Happy to put in my 2 cents! Obviously there are no absolute answers, but I can tell you that my R7 2700x is still performing great. Not too long ago they were on sale for 50% off (newegg I think). That would be a steal. But hey! It's $120 off on Amazon right now. Not quite 50%, but pretty damn good! I have an AIO cooler for it, Ryzen is really good at boosting itself if you just keep it cool. The only way I was able to get higher clocks than Auto was by over-volting it pretty bad.

So IMO it's not necessary to buy the absolute top of the line CPU. The 2700x is right in the sweet spot of affordability and future-proofing, especially at $200. I don't anticipate needing to upgrade my CPU for a few years still, already had it for about 2.

As I'm sure you're aware, the GPU is what's really important. Partly because of Alyx but also just because it was time, I bought a Nitro+ 5700XT this winter, upgraded from a Nitro+ RX-580. I was able to run VR "okay" with the 580, but obviously nowhere near what I would call an A+ experience. With the 5700xt, Alyx defaulted to "High Fidelity Settings," looks really good and runs smooth, still could bump a few things up. Other options are Low, Medium, and Very High Fidelity. 5700XT is about $380-$450, 2700x is about $200, so we'll say that's $700. Roughly $150 for motherboard, $200 RAM, $100 PSU, $50-100 for a case brings it's to ~$1300. Then you'll just need KB+M, monitor, headphones/speakers.

Then there's the VR hardware. I'm on a Rift CV1 with OG Touch controllers, which only cost me $300 (there was a $100 off sale) over a year ago. I'd love to try the Rift S or Index, but honestly I don't feel like the hardware is dampening my experience very much, if at all. But I wouldn't advise going any lower than the basic Rift. I always thought the Vive wands looked awful but never tried it, you might prefer them.

So all told, I think it's definitely possible to achieve an A+ Alyx-perience (omfg shoot me in the face) for under $2k. I was being fairly generous with my prices, you could easily spend less than what I quoted for a few of those things. You could probably get away with spending closer to $1,500, but then you might be looking at closer to an A or B+ experience.

Wait. Doesn't the 2700x come with a Wraith Prism LED Cooler? I guess the Wraith max is different. I would use the cooler that comes with it and see how that goes and then get an AIO. Either way it looks like a cool build.

I ordered one yesterday for homelab and the cooler was part of the $164.49

2700X is currently $165 in USA: https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Wraith-Cooler/dp/B07B428M7F/

I would take that over 3600 at that price, especially for streaming.

So i was looking at a computer processor and i noticed that in the new and used area it said it was 100 dollars cheaper. So i click on it to see buy it and it basically says to try to update filters or my location. So i clear all the filters and it still doesn’t come up. Can someone please help me because i’ve been watching this processor for a while and used honey to see how much it normally is. But this is the first time it has been down in price and I’ve been able to catch it.

Here is the link to it: https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Wraith-Cooler/dp/B07B428M7F

They who? AMD doesn't control the price, retailers do. Amazon prices aren't that high. If you're seeing it for more, it's likely because that seller's supply is dwindling so they're willing to try to milk as much as they can off their last few units. Supply and demand.

Can you spot the bottleneck? Please help!

Guys, I have the following specs:

What should I upgrade to run PUBG at 1080p at 144 consistent frames with Textures on Medium and Sharpen enabled?

Can someone please spot the bottleneck or give me tips on how to improve my performance. It runs like wonders in other games, this is the only game it gives me headaches, and none of the suggested tweaks helped!

Yes, Ryzen 7 2700x. They’re cheap and powerful.

I’m currently running that with an RTX 2080. I’m hoping to upgrade to the 2080ti this Summer.

Thank you very much! I am seriously considering pulling the trigger on this build, all looks good to me. Quick question, do you know the difference between these:

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Processor with Wraith Spire LED Cooler

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Processor with Wraith Prism LED Cooler

They are both Ryzen 7 2700, ones spire and ones wraith, but theres about a $80 difference. I feel as the CPU will be important in this build so I want to get it right. Thanks again though, you were already super helpful

That's Microcenter In-Store Only. So if you'r a chosen one that lives next to meca sure. Otherwise a 2700x is 169.99 before tax on Newegg and Amazon, which is 5.5% for me so a total of 179. Obv 3600x is even more.

I'm building a proxmox (virtual machine) server and trying to decide on which CPU to get. Ryzen looks really good right now, but need ECC support.

I'm planning the build around this motherboard, it looks pretty solid for a home server.

Just not sure which CPU to get. I know I need a PRO to get ECC support? ECC is a must for this build.

Number of core is important in this build, but don't have infinite money. :( I'm trying to find a "sweet spot" between performance, cores and cost. I guess my budget for CPU in this build is around $150 to $250 ?

This AMD Ryzen 7 2700X looks decent. I'm just not familiar with AMD's line. Would spending another $50 to $100 get a substantial upgrade?

Power is also somewhat of a factor, this 65W TDP seems very appealing, but would be almost twice the price to go from 105W to 65W?

Yay, its always exciting hearing people get into the pc world. As of ur parts, they can use some help.

For the cpu you SHOULD go with Ryzen 7 2700X over the one you have rn because its actually cheaper now at only $217 (freaking steal in my opinion) and it has 2 more cores, 4 more threads and has higher clocks, there’s no reason not to go with that.

For ram, although I noticed the 3600mhz speed, its CL18 which means it has slow timings. Again go with this Crucial kit its also 3600mhs but is CL16 which is going to give you a nice little performance bump for cheaper.

For gpu, you can go with this zotac RTX 2060 which is faster, newer and haa RTX so you could enjoy all that plus faster adobe app rendering of u use gpu acceleration.

I just realized that you live in Canada and the prices are probably in Canadian dollars so just compare the prices of the parts I suggested to your current ones and see if they fit in your budget. I’d say go through them in the order of CPU, GPU then ram if you can only change some, and for ram you could also do 3200mhz CL16 instead if those are cheaper, the performance wouldn’t be different from 3600 CL18

Good luck with the build and hmu with any questions

Thank you for the read. Indeed that was helpful, but for other things as I understood.

I may have been misunderstood. The problem for me is that the CPU is sitting at 20-25% with both client and server running at the same time and that the memory is at about 71% utilized(5gb used out of 7gb). Also, the overall memory is most of the time 70-80%. I'm also having my browser opened(mozila) and it still doesn't pass 25% CPU utilization.

I also want to say that I agree with you, ram means peformance for minecraft. Most of the time I want to have around 1.5-2gb RAM free for my server, in order for it to run smoothly. That thing is also mentioned here (link that was also in the OP). But the thing that made me want to enable multi-threading is that the CPU is barely used while both client and server are running on my PC.

If it matters, my memory kit is this(memory). It is running the X.M.P profile. The CPU is this(CPU). CPU is running at stock speeds.

so depending on your motherboard chipset, you'd be looking at a Ryzen 7 2700x or a ryzen 7 3700x. If you have a B350 or A320 chipset, then go for the 2700x after a bios update. If you have a B450, B550, X470, or X570 chipset, then go for the 3700x.

If you do plan on going with a RTX 2060 or GTX 1660ti, unless you're streaming, the Ryzen 7 might be a little bit overkill, so maybe instead a Ryzen 5 2600 or Ryzen 5 3600 will also work just fine.

You also might want to throw in a SSD if you don't have one already.

Ok. I think you’re gonna have to make some serious budget cuts to begin with, membrane keyboard, cheap mouse, mouse pad and headset. I would buy a second hand monitor and use whatever u have left over on the pc. You probably won’t have the budget for any high end rgb lighting or an aio. The best budget cuts would be a cheaper case, an hdd instead of ssd, ryzen over intel, amd over nvidia, cheaper power supply (but not too cheap that it could be dangerous) and totally scraping any extra Aesthetics (rgb, cable extensions, etc)

Also this build has no cooling so Should I not get one?

I;m a newbie to building PCs so I picked one of the builds off the website.. I'm looking to use this PC for low level deep learning and gaming at the same time. As such, I plan to swap out the CPU in this build for a strong one.

The AMD ryzen 2700x. Is this a good idea and do I now need to change my power supply etc? Also I want a better looking case and want to upgrade it to a more RGB setup. How would I go about doing this?

You also have to get a new mobo, go with a b450 to save some cash

Here is a cheaper one last gen

both cpus will work with a b450i the 3700x may need a bios update

In my opinion, I don't think the 2700x was the right part to upgrade. Unless you're using it for streaming and productivity, a Ryzen 5 "2600" for $85 (review by GamersNexus here) and a second hand GPU like a GTX 1070 that is going for $185 on r/hardwareswap would have been a much better upgrade for the money.

While those two parts are about $40 more expensive than a 2700x from Amazon (assuming that's where you bought it), you would have a much better experience with a heavily modded Skyrim and other games. You can sell your GTX 960 afterwards to recoup the $40 extra you spent on r/hardwareswap

Thats my two cents, take it how you will but I've ran a heavily modded Skyrim (phoenix flavor guide) using a Ryzen 5 2600 and GTX 1070 and it was super smooth with rare dips to the 40s.

Computer becomes unresponsive any help?

So basically I've been doing fine on this PC then recently since this Sunday. Anytime I play low-performance games I don't have a problem but when I paly a high-performance game my screen will freeze on that game and if I manage to Alt + Tab out the other windows are also unresponsive. Like I said this is all new for me, I don't have any windows updates, I checked as I am typing this, I'm up to date on all drivers and bios updates I'm not sure what could be causing this problem I've even gotten compressed air and cleaned all the dust-out. Heres my specs MotherBoard Ram SSD CPU GPU PowerSupply HDD
