this sale seems horribly average

Team GX2 256gb for $26.99

ADATA SU635 240gb $27.99

Silicon Power A55 256gb $27.99

a 250gb SSD without dram can easily be had for under $30 every day

240GB FOR $26. ADATA makes good SSDs. I have bought 3 without issues in the last 4 years.

Certainly

These should be plenty of power for internet browsers, watching videos, and general productivity.

If you plan to have a lot of tabs open or if the online classes require watching a video while having other programs and things open as well I'd recommend making sure you have 8gb RAM. 4gb will probably do it, but 8 will definitely do it smoother.

I do still recommend the SSD as well. It will drastically improve the speed of literally everything you do on the computer.

Something like the link below for $30 will provide a tremendous boost to the speed of the computer. Quality of life type stuff.

Should be an open slot for it already, so you just plug it in and follow an online tutorial to migrate your OS over to it and you're done.

I just placed my order for a model 3 SR+ and I've been looking at accessories, my question- would this SSD (along with a USB adapter) be suitable for sentry mode/dash cam recording? It's specifically marketed as an internal SSD, I wasn't sure if i should be looking at something else or if anyone has experience with these.

thanks!

So a new CPU, GPU, motherboard, and RAM. And probably an SSD as well. That's basically a new computer...

You are just reusing the case and power supply. The case will probably be fine. But, this is a 10 year old power supply though. Make sure it is decent to still use (it probably isn't)

Honestly, on your friend's PC, I wouldn't put any more money into it. Just threw the cheapest ~250GB SSD into it, a clean Windows install, and maybe your old RX 580 if you really want to.

Its is most likely your hhd. If you use the ssd I linked you it will most definitely increase performance. You cpu is also causing a pretty drastic bottle neck for your titan. A nice upgrade would be a 3700x

Yeah. Would you recommend a GTX 1550 Ti or would you go newer. I used to know my gaming stuff but haven't been in the gaming pc market in years.

Was going to do the system like this

 • CPU: i5-3570
 • Motherboard: What ever I can find that works well with other parts
 • GPU: ?
 • Ram: 16 GB
 • Hard Drive: 1TB
 • SSD: 128GB
 • Case: Same as Motherboard
 • And then basic monitor and mouse keyboard combo

Awesome thanks for the information, I feel like used wouldn't be worth the hassle over brand new considering how cheap new low capacity SSD's seem to be that would be suited. Heck glancing at ebay there's some auctions going for more then just buying the same thing brand new.....

You could some good performance if you saved $500 or so.

Thankfully yours is a thick one because that actually makes it a lot easier to upgrade. The thin ones are pretty limiting in terms of upgrades.

My suggestions:

For graphics card:

https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-GeForce-Profile-Graphics-GV-N1656OC-4GL/dp/B087R7V2Q6

The 1650 is far better than the 1030. The 1650 delivers good gaming performance and could probably play most games at medium/high graphics quality with smooth fps.

The reason why I suggested the 1030 before is because that is the only new graphics card that works in the thin one.

Cpu:

I'm not sure which one this computer already has. You can go to task manager and click the performance tab to see which one it has.

Since this one is very cheap I assume it has an i3 in it. That needs to be upgraded since the older i3s don't hold up very well.

I suggest either an i5-2400 or a i5-3470 for the cpu since they are cheap and are good value for money although they are older. They don't make new cpus for the 7010 anymore so you will have to get the cpu used.

https://www.ebay.com/p/28027019651

SSD:

You may not know what this is but it will make the computer feel very fast. It's basically a hard drive but it loads programs/games very quickly. They are more expensive and have less space but if you put your windows install on it it will be very fast.

This one is what I suggest:

https://www.amazon.com/ADATA-SU635-3D-NAND-Internal-ASU635SS-240GQ-R/dp/B07PLNNDL2

Ram: Again, I don't know how much you have right now. You can check by going to task manager and clocking the performance tab.

For gaming you are going to want 8gb or 16gb of ddr3 ram. I can't really suggest exactly what you should get for this because I dont know what the ram situation looks like inside of the computer. Ram doesnt usually cost much either, and it should be $60 at most.

Definitely do some research on how to actually do these upgrades. Most of them are pretty simple but it's nice to know so that you don't break something. In terms of performance you will be able to play almost all games with medium graphics quality at least while getting 60 or maybe more fps.

It doesn't quite cost $500 but these are the upgrades I suggest to get the most for what you are paying for.

Processor/mobo decisions

Hi,

I've been accumulating parts to build a new mid-range (whole setup <$1000) PC for a few days now, waiting out for sales and such until I find a decent deal. I have a Google Doc prepared which lists my current setup if you're interested, I know its not PCPartpicker but it works:

CPU: R3600, R3300x?

GPU: Sapphire 5600 XT?

~~Case: - 84.99 (Rosewill Prism T)~~

~~Power Supply - 58.35: Corsair CX550M (found on eBay for a great deal in the current climate)~~

Mobo: Gigabyte Aorus Elite? Steel Legend ASROCK? Pro4 ASRock? STRIX B450-F? Tomahawk MAX? (lol no chance of that going back in stock it seems)

RAM: https://www.newegg.com/xpg-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/0RN-00KG-000A3

59.99

Storage:

29.99

44.99 (I will probably [hopefully?] find a better deal than this)

~~Monitor: 169.99 (Newegg 144hz Acer)~~

Keyboard: ???

~~Mouse: free (bundled w/ case)~~

Anyways, I really would like to have this PC set up by the end of this month and I could use some advice regarding what to do for the CPU and mobo. As we all know, b450s around the ecommerce-verse are practically nonexistent right now except for a few scalpers on eBay and newegg, and while the Ryzen 3300x was supposed to be available a while ago, it also is basically unattainable except through aliexpress, which is obviously a no go. Basically my questions are:

Should I wait a few days for B550 and get a bottom of the barrel one of those? Or should I grab a cheap ASRock Promontory B450 (the only B450 in stock right now it seems, and only in micro ATX) or wait for other B450s to come in stock?

And should I wait for the 3300x to go back in stock or go with a 3600?

I will be using this PC for school, which will include using a lot of music production software (ableton) and the like, as well as some gaming, a mix of newer AAA games like Forza Horizon 4 and older titles like TF2.

I’m looking to build my first ever gaming PC, and need someone to tell me if the parts I’m picking are good.

I was hoping to keep the PC at around $500 (kinda failed) and was hoping if anyone could tell me if I’m heading in the right direction.

My main games are rocket league, rainbow six, and Minecraft, So I don’t think I need a beefy computer as of yet lol

Links to all parts:

case

motherboard

power supply

SSD

RAM

graphics card

processor

I’m a noob when it comes to PCs, so any help is appreciated!

Note: also if anyone knows good budget monitors please share lol

You wont be able to get a brand-new part computer, and if you could, it would have alot worse value than a used PC.

Get a old PC from ebay with atleast Core 2 Duo or Phenom 3 (or Intel i7-4760k, somebody give me some suggestions), and if so, replace it with a card like:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DF3WFX3/ref=twister_B07K3XV84Q

A RX 550 (can play minecraft at 60 fps fine) (might be overkill)

and then a good SSD, if your son is only going to game I think 240 gb will do

https://www.amazon.com/ADATA-SU635-3D-NAND-Internal-ASU635SS-240GQ-R/dp/B07PLNNDL2/

If you find a really good deal, you can get 280-350 dollars, and prob 300 at best.

What games does your brother plan to play?

At this budget, I would say the best option is to buy a used prebuilt desktop/workstation PC and then upgrading the GPU rather than buying new parts.

For example, here's something you get from parts available in all of US:

 1. Lenovo Thinkstation P300 with i5-4570, 4gb ram, 500GB HDD and 280W 80-plus Bronze PSU $99.99 or best offer on eBay-- I bought one on a $90 offer a while ago
 2. Adata SU635 240 gb SSD $23.99 ($26.99 - $3 coupon discount) on Amazon
 3. GTX 1650 Super GPU from EVGA B-Stock page $175+shipping (which is $12.50 or so to my location in California) but you can get 5% off with an associate code So the total cost would be like $180.
 4. 8gb of DDR3 Desktop RAM $22.50 on eBay.
 5. A dual SATA to PCIE adapter to power the GPU $3.99 on eBay.

The total (pre-tax) amount is $320-330. Compared to a good new-build option with a Ryzen 3200G, you are going to get about the same CPU performance and several times the GPU performance. In many locations, there are local deals that are significantly better than those listed for the GPU and the prebuilt PC on sites like Offerup.

Now what you are limited on is future upgradability-- you can only go up to a 4 core 8 thread GPU on the platform, and the GPU choices is limited by power (unless you buy a new PSU, and a 24-to-14 pin adapter for the motherboard) and size (cards much larger than the one listed here won't fit). But I think these are rather secondary factors-- if you need an upgrade, you can always sell this one and buy the PC that you need when you need it.

At that Price I recommend:

 1. Buying a Dell OptiPlex 7020 mt for $217
 2. Stick in a Adata SU635 SSD or a WD green HDD for $30
 3. Stick in a gtx 1650 for $150

Total $397

You get an i5 4590 (3.7ghz turbo), 8gb ram, dvd drive, GTX 1650, 120gb ssd, a 750gb hdd (or 240gb ssd), and windows 10 preinstalled.

I have all my parts ready, but my dad asked me what about a WiFi card, we don't have an eathernet point in your room and I was like "uhhhhhhhhh........." and then he asked about how I was going to download Windows. I have all my parts, but now im not so sure that i've got everything ready. Help?

Here is my build (\~500 Gaming PC)

https://www.amazon.com/ADATA-SU635-3D-NAND-Internal-ASU635SS-240GQ-R/dp/B07PLNNDL2

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0838YKLCS/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new

But I still feel like I don't have everything. Becuase now I know that I also have to get a wifi card. I know you have to buy windows, and you also to plug it into a USB port. Will that work with the stuff i've got? The parts people recommended me and the tutorials on how to choose parts didn't discuss a wifi card. I heard that some Mobo's can have a wifi card built in and they're typically crappy. We have really really good wifi where I live because my dad is a Progammer and says it helps him work, so i'd want to take full advantage of it so on Minecraft I don't suffer any server-side lag (lag caused by the wifi network connecting to the server, not your PC).

Hi, this was very interesting and a fun read.

Here is my suggestion: from at bit of googling I determined that PCI is indeed backwards compatible to current PCIe-16x slots, so if you inset the card it should just work provided the drivers function correctly.

This leads me to my next point the drivers. For old hardware they my be difficult to get working on modern operating systems. I suggest going with the 32bit version of windows. However, the 32bit version of windows also limits you to 4gb of ram. Meaning even if you were to build a brand new pc (the more expensive option) you would only be limited to 4gb ever.

This is why I suggest going with somewhat older hardware. It's cheap and has a serial port like you mentioned you needed, so there is no need to use USB adapters or something that could cause issues of its own.

I have taken a long look at those pictures you have attached and determined that IBM pc isn't actually sff. (makes sense otherwise you couldn't fit a PCI card inside) rather it's a slim micro ATX and it looks like you have plenty fo space for a micro ATX mini tower.

Based on this I recommend you head over to eBay and pick up a Dell OptiPlex 970. They are cheap and abundant and have a serial port.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-790-990-Tower-CORE-I3-NO-MEMORY-NO-HARD-DRIVE/253819673759?hash=item3b18d4dc9f%3Ag%3AlOwAAOSwax5YviNo&LH_BIN=1

This one displays documentation. As you can see it also has a PCI slot for good measure.

Can also get the slim version here

https://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-OPTIPLEX-790-DESKTOP-PC-i3-2120-3-10Ghz-4GB-RAM-PC-COMPUTER/233579879979?hash=item3662721e2b%3Ag%3A0VcAAOSwDtResYFH&LH_BIN=1

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-790-Intel-Core-i3-2120-3-30GHz-4GB-RAM-500GB-HDD-DVD-RW/402248893121?hash=item5da7e702c1%3Ag%3A5OQAAOSwOWBeqtrW&LH_BIN=1

You will have to reuse the pci riser cable for to be able to lay it on its side inside the case though. Which if I have understood correctly is the way you have been doing it so far, so do whatever suits you best.

https://www.amazon.com/oukery-Graphics-Express-Flexible-Extender/dp/B07T97DGKR/ref=sr_1_17?crid=1TI2VCVJ88S0X&dchild=1&keywords=pci+riser+cable&qid=1588716724&sprefix=pci+riser%2Caps%2C261&sr=8-17

Here is a new one

You can use your old ddr3 with these machines. You can get a 240 gig ssd for 35$ here:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PLNNDL2?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1

here is a Y splitter for the serial to make 2 out of 1.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/8in-DB9-Female-to-2x-DB9-Male-Serial-Y-Splitter-Cable/280706325316?epid=1560409570&hash=item415b669b44:g:gSgAAOSw~OVWzjqw

The systems I picked have i3 2100. It's older, which makes it cheap, but is light years more advanced than a pentium 4. It holds up surprisingly well and I think is perfect for your use case. This also makes it cheap enough that you can rebuy an entire unit in case it breaks or very easily and find cheap spare parts. You can also upgrade to an i5 or i7 for example

Lastly I wanted to show you that you can get magnetic dust filters to help with the dust.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/MoKo-120mm-Computer-Cooler-Fan-Dust-Filter-4pcs-Magnetic-Dustproof-Cover-Grills/202559314723?epid=15027745964&hash=item2f2979db23:g:s6sAAOSw6eRcMvGo

Overall I think you will find it a definitive upgrade, hope you like my suggestions ?

Now if you could explain to me what this PCI card actually does ? And what you make ? I would be quite intrigued.
